about

"Three Feet from the Moon" was my 3rd album for the indie Norwegian label Uniton Records. It was released on vinyl and cassette in 1985, and a Japanese release on Teichiku Records two years later added a cd version. In 1997, I remixed the original multitrack tapes to digital for a cd re-release on Eurock Records (available here), which included 2 additional solo piano pieces from that era. In retrospect, "3 Feet" was a transitional record for me - it straddles the piano-centric compositions of "Untitled", and the denser electronic tone poems that would follow in "Wheat and Rust" and "Glass Green". Since "Untitled" I had added a Memorymoog synthesizer which opened up my palette of sounds considerably. The title came from one of my favorite authors of the time Knut Hamsun (ironically also Norwegian) who wrote that as a struggling young writer in the early days, he had lived in an attic apartment, "...three feet from the moon."

"Each piece is a finely polished jewel, carefully composed and presented, without a note or tone randomly placed." -- Sound Choice, USA

"* * * * ... The subtle use of synthesizer, vibraphone and guitar embellish the sense of eerie wistfulness and more often than not I find myself flicking through old photograph albums, reading those letters... This is the American's third LP and I'm already yearning for the fourth." -- Sounds, UK

"Simply brilliant... his most accomplished, cohesive and musically endearing work to date... not a second on the album is less than immaculate." -- Lotus, UK
