about

Originally released in 1991 on the Swedish Multimood Records label, "A Desperate Serenity" was Story's first of 4 collaborations with composer/sound artist Dwight Ashley. A darker, denser counterpoint to Story's solo work of that period, "Serenity" thrives on deep spaces that appear static, but are made up of many layers of shifting phrases and textures. Embracing found sounds (like the funny yet eerie reading of the role call of a city council meeting in "Motion Carried") and odd structures, Story's idiosyncratic keyboard patterns often bubble to the surface, in interesting counterpoint to the album's epic, rich drones.

"...Story and Ashley collectively showcase fourteen tone poems that alternate between exercises in dramatic tension and ruminative, haunting shards of picaresque beauty. The manipulation of sounds varies greatly, from echoed acoustic pianos, to shimmering tape loops and discreet electronics often subtly altered, processed or enhanced as they evoke their conflicting, shifting moods... the two instrumentalists make stunning music of a perfect pair." -- i/e, USA

"...a soundscape work that is among the best we've heard in a while. Ashley/Story are able to swing from the sincerely beautiful to the haunting and discordant without the cliches that most others use." -- Marginal, Canada

"A Desperate Serenity is a superb work of innovative electronic music. The fourteen pieces oscillate between futurism and beauty..." -- Sintetizando, Spain

Five Stars (out of 5)... -- Blitz, Portugal
