"Rust Smudges" is an expansion of Story's recent explorations into a process he calls 'smudging' - transforming existing music into a hazy ambient progression of slowly evolving audio snapshots, much as time blurs vivid memories into soft washes of color and sense. As a reimagining of his own 1987 work "Wheat and Rust", it is also a rumination on the passage of time - repurposing both the music and the media of his youth, Story individually hand-dubbed the processed audio back onto the original 1987 "Wheat and Rust" cassettes he had saved for the last 35 years. The inevitable and unpredictable aging of this fragile medium ensure - like people - no two cassettes will sound quite the same. Bridging his past and present, digital and analog, "Rust Smudges" is a poignant reflection of a lifetime in music, and a sly nod to a 'cassette culture' that was in its first generation when Story and his fellow explorers first exploited it in the 1970's.
