Blue Tofu is the duo of Andrea Mathews (vocals/lyrics) and multi-instrumentalist/composer Tim Story. Their eponymous first release 'Blue Tofu' was released in 2001 on the boutique Dubious Recordings label. Mathews and Story had worked on and off for 4 years on the project - Story's first 'pop' record - and created an album that Keyboard Magazine said " takes pop music in a genuinely fresh direction....The music itself defies pigeonholing. Andrea Mathews' sultry, intimate vocals tease us, and the arrangements grow like orchids."

For an album that flew largely under the radar, 'Blue Tofu' won a dedicated audience among audiophiles, and in 2012, 10 years after it's release, the magazine Absolute Sound chose it in a special feature as one of the best 40 albums of the last 40 years, saying 'their music is at once lyric and unflinchingly honest, with an all-to-rare (nowadays) feeling of live lived rather than romanticized."
